Sustainability is about managing the depletion of natural resources as much as possible to maintain an ecological balance.

Most furniture manufactured today is not generally done as part of a sustainable process but what we do at Brenmac is leave the smallest footprint possible, always considering the environment and being as responsible as we possibly can in handcrafting our industrial furniture and accessories.

The level of sustainability within furniture supply chains depends on several factors, such as legislation, types of materials used, logistics and waste.

Legislation

More advanced countries and economies have high standards of environmental protection. Countries across Europe tend to have the highest standards, so British made products do still fall into this. Plus, at Brenmac we hand make all furniture and accessories on-site, so have complete control on where we source materials such as copper, steel and wood, as well as how we minimise our environmental impact during the production process.

Materials we source to create industrial furniture and accessories

Wood

Wood, or timber as many refer to it as in the mass furniture manufacturing world, can be a fully sustainable material.

Timber felling and replanting is a well-understood process and much of it is regulated through organisations such as The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) who certify products originate from well-managed, sustainable forests. There is also The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is the world’s largest forest certification system.

We aim to use as much recycled and reclaimed wood as we possibly can. It adds to the unique nature of our bespoke pieces for high appeal.

Copper and steel metals for the industrial style

Steel is one of the most recyclable materials on the planet as it retains an extremely high recycle rate. The energy saved by recycling reduces annual energy consumption within the steel industry.

Wow! Copper is estimated to have been used for around 10,000 years and forms a large part of the recycling industry with as much as half of all copper coming from recycled source rather than copper ore.

Here at Brenmac we love to use copper in the production of our industrial style furniture and accessories, and do use recycled metals as often as possible because it has a tremendous recyclable life span.

Copper – one of the most recycled materials in the world

Almost all copper that has ever been mined is still in use today as it is one of the most recycled materials in the world, with an almost infinite recycle life.

Copper recycling reduces the industrial impact on the environment because it:

  1. reduces landfill
  2. creates less waste
  3. can be used as a replacement for glass and plastic
  4. reduces energy consumption when it isn’t extracted from the ore
  5. limits the emission of harmful toxins into the environment

Recycle, recycle, recycle

Copper is infinite supply, so we are very much able to make the most of what we have, rather than mining new ore.

The recycling of metals such as iron and copper benefits local economies and can be done just about anywhere, so there are no limitations or obstacles in accessing these highly recyclable materials. Plus,  copper has the added benefit of holding around 90% of its original value which makes for a long term investment when it comes to bespoke furniture and accessories, that not only stand the test of time, but retain their value in monetary terms as well as being highly recyclable.

We own the supply chain

We keep our supply chain a short as possible by sourcing new and recycled materials from local suppliers which lessens the environmental impact that we have, unlike furniture sourced from the Far East.

Buying high quality British handmade industrial furniture and accessories not only provides business premises and homeowners with a bespoke piece, it also maintains its value and is highly recyclable to fulfil everyone’s commitment to the environment.

Some great examples of our best sellers are The Handmade Copper and Wood Bar, suitable for commercial or home use, and our reclaimed wood Large 3 Shelf Copper Pipe and Urban Style Display Unit . We can also create recycled pieces to order if you have a specific requirement or idea that needs to be made to measure.

If you have an idea or would like us to develop a made to measure industrial piece for your room get in touch.
